Viking Oven F1 / F2: Temperature Sensor & Overheat Faults

F1 is the oven telling you its temperature sensor circuit can’t be trusted. F2 is the oven telling you it got too hot and shut itself down. They’re the two most common coded faults on Viking wall ovens and ranges — and they’re related: a drifting sensor (F1) left long enough can let a cavity run away into F2.

What’s behind them

  1. The temperature sensor itself — Viking oven sensors are resistive probes; they drift or fail open with age. A healthy sensor reads roughly 1,080–1,100 Ω at room temperature, and that’s the first thing we measure.
  2. Sensor wiring and connectors — the harness runs along the hot side of the cavity; heat-aged insulation and loose spade connectors cause intermittent F1 that comes and goes.
  3. The relay or control board — a stuck bake relay keeps an element energized past setpoint, which is one path to F2.
  4. A genuine over-temp event — a failed convection fan, blocked vent or runaway self-clean can trip F2 on healthy electronics.

What you can try

One power cycle: breaker off for 60 seconds, back on, then a short test bake at 350°F while you watch. If F1/F2 returns — or the oven temperature is visibly wrong against an oven thermometer — stop there. Repeated resets don’t fix a drifting sensor, and an oven you can’t trust is a fire-safety issue, not just a baking issue.

FAQ

F1 appears only during self-clean.

Self-clean runs the cavity near 900°F — marginal sensors and harnesses fail there first. The sensor circuit still needs testing; it will start failing at baking temperatures soon.

Can I keep using the cooktop with an oven F1?

On a range, yes — the burners are a separate circuit. Just don’t use the oven cavity until the sensor path is checked.

My oven thermometer says temperature is fine, but F1 keeps showing.

Then the fault is likely in the wiring or the board’s sensor input, not the probe itself — which is exactly what the resistance-and-harness check separates.
