A note on double ovens
A Viking double oven is two cavities sharing one control interface — but with independent sensors, elements and door hardware per cavity. One cavity running cold is a one-cavity repair in most cases, and we quote it that way. These units are heavy and trimmed into cabinetry: we protect the floor and the cabinet faces, and reinstall trim correctly when the unit has to come out.
Self-clean, and why the month matters here
A pyrolytic clean cycle takes the cavity far above cooking temperature and holds it there for hours. Everything around the oven — door seal, hinges, control board, the cabinetry it is trimmed into — absorbs part of that. On a mild day the kitchen carries it away. On a 105°F Sacramento afternoon with the air conditioning already at its limit, it does not.
This is behind a recognisable pattern of August calls: an oven that ran self-clean on the hottest day of the year and afterwards will not unlock, or comes back with a control fault. The cycle did not break it on its own; the cycle plus an ambient the design did not assume is what did.
Two things follow from that, and neither costs anything. Run self-clean in the cool part of the day — early morning is ideal — or leave it for autumn entirely. And do not run it the day before you need the oven. If a door lock or a thermal cutout is going to object, you want to find out with time to get a part, not the morning of a dinner.
We see this most in Elk Grove, Natomas and Rancho Cordova — newer builds where the oven is trimmed into a tight cabinet run with limited air around it, and where the kitchen is on the west side of the house. Older Land Park and East Sacramento kitchens suffer less from the cabinet side and more from the room, which simply has nowhere to put the heat.
If your oven is currently locked after a clean cycle, do not force the door. The mechanism is doing what it was designed to do while the cavity is still hot, and forcing it turns a wait into a repair.

Let it cool fully — many latches release on their own. If it stays locked or shows a latch fault, stop forcing it: the latch motor or position switch needs service, and forcing breaks the assembly.
